Add and remove task followers

Followers (formerly watchers) are people who are notified when changes are made to a task. Assignees are automatically set as followers on tasks they're assigned to.

Unlike assignees, followers aren't necessarily responsible for completing task items.

What you'll need

Add a follower to a task

To add a follower to a task in Task view:

  1. From the upper-right corner of an open task, click the bell icon. You can also add followers using Quick Create tasks and Bulk Action Toolbar.
  2. Click an avatar to select yourself, another person, or a Team.
  3. The task follower's avatar is highlighted.
  4. The task follower will be sent task updates in their notifications.

Actions that add task followers

The following are some common actions that also add you as a task follower:

  • When a task is assigned to you.
  • When you edit a task name or description.
  • When you comment on a task.
  • When a task comment is assigned to you.
  • When you create a new task.
  • When you change a task's due date.
  • When you change a task's status.
  • When you change a task's priority.

You can be added or removed as a follower by Automations.

Remove followers

Followers can be identified by their highlighted avatars. You'll also see the last time a follower viewed the task directly under their name.

To remove a task follower:

  1. From the upper-right corner of an open task, click the bell icon. You can also remove followers when using Quick Create tasks and Bulk Action Toolbar.
  2. Click an avatar to select yourself, another person, or a Team.
  3. They'll be sent task updates in their notifications only when someone @mentions or assigns them an item within the task.
