Generate task summaries and updates with AI Custom Fields

Get task summaries and updates without opening a task!

Add the AI Summary and AI Progress Updates Custom Fields to a Space, Folder, or List. Then add these Custom Fields to a column in a view.

Create a new AI Custom Field

AI Custom Fields are two text fields that provide summaries or updates generated by ClickUp AI. The two fields can be set up separately in the same location.

  1. Access the Custom Field Manager.
  2. In the upper-right of the Custom Fields Manager, click Create new field
  3. Choose one of the following fields:
    • AI Summary: Generate quick task summaries.
    • AI Progress Updates: Generate task progress updates for a chosen period of time.

      If you choose Text area (Long Text) field you can also select an AI field from the Fill with AI dropdown.

  4. In the Create field modal, enter a name for the field. You can also add a description.
    • The Type dropdown defaults to Text area (Long Text) and cannot be changed if you want to use AI. 
  5. From the Format dropdown, select Bulleted list, Short, or Detailed. You can edit this at any time. 
    • AI Progress Updates also includes options to generate updates from a specific time period. Choose Today, Yesterday, This week, Last 24 hours, or the last 3, 7, or 30 days. 
  6. Click Create
    • You can manage, edit, or delete AI Custom Fields like you would any other Custom Field. 

Add an existing AI Custom Field to a new location

You can add an existing AI Custom Field to a new location in the same way you would any Custom Field. 

Generate a summary or update

You can generate a summary or update from an open task or a column in an open List, Board, Calendar, or Table view.

Generate a summary or update from an open task

To generate a summary or update from an open task:

  1. Below the task description click the Details tab.
  2. Hover in the Custom Field. 
  3. On the right side of the Custom Field, click the Generate button. 
    • This button is labeled Refresh after info is generated for the first time.
    • If there is not enough info to generate a summary or update, a message will display.
  4. ClickUp AI generates the info.
    • You can click the copy icon to copy the text. 
  5. As work on the task progresses, click Refresh to generate a new summary or update.  

Generate a summary or update from an open view

To generate a summary or update from an open view:

  1. In a location containing an AI Custom Field open or add a List, Board, Calendar, or Table view.
  2. After adding the AI Custom Field as a column to your view, in the AI Custom Field column click the Generate button.
    • If there is not enough info to generate a summary or update, a message displays.
  3. ClickUp AI will generate the info. 
  4. Click into the field to see the entire summary or update.

  5. As work on the task progresses, click the Refresh button to generate a new summary or update. 

Manage AI Custom Fields

AI Custom Fields can be managed like any Custom Field. The only difference is that you can quickly locate AI-enabled fields. 

To locate AI-enabled fields:

  1. Access the Custom Field Manager.
  2. Scroll to the Text area (Long Text) section.
  3. AI Custom Fields have an AI icon to the right of the field name. Other fields have no icon.
