Generate task summaries and updates with AI Custom Fields

Get task summaries and updates without opening a task!

Add the AI Summary and AI Progress Updates Custom Fields to a Space, Folder, or List. Then add these Custom Field columns to your view.

Add AI Custom Fields to a Workspace

Custom Field columns can only be added to List, Board, Calendar, and Table views. 

You can also access, create, and edit AI Custom Fields in the Custom Field Manager.

To add AI Custom Fields to a location in a Workspace that does not have Custom Field Manager enabled:

  1. In the Sidebar, click the ellipsis ... next to the location.
  2. Select the settings menu, then click Custom Fields

  3. In the Manage Custom Fields modal, click New Custom Field
  4. Choose a Custom Field:
    • AI Summary: Generate quick task summaries.
    • AI Progress Updates: Generate task progress updates for a chosen period of time.

      Both fields can be set up separately in the same location.

  5. In the Create field modal, enter a name for the field.
    • The Field Type defaults to Text area.
    • The Fill With AI dropdown displays the AI Custom Field you chose.
  6. From the Format dropdown, you can select a format for your summary or update. The choices are Bulleted list, Short, or Detailed. You can edit this at any time. 
    • AI Progress Updates also includes the option to generate updates from a specific time period. Choose last 24 hours, or the last 3, 7, or 30 days. 
  7. After configuring the settings, click Create
    • You can edit or delete AI Custom Fields like you would any other Custom Field. 

Generate a summary or update

You can generate a summary or update from a List, Board, Calendar, and Table view. Summaries can be generated from within the task or from a column in the view.

To generate a summary or update from a task:

  1. In the Details tab, find the AI Custom Field. 
  2. To the far-right in the Custom Field, click the Generate button. 
    • If there is not enough info to generate a summary or update, a message will display.
  3. ClickUp AI will generate the info.
    • You can click the copy icon to copy the text or click the x icon to clear it. 
    • As work on the task progresses, click Refresh to generate a new summary or update. 

To generate a summary or update from a view column:

  1. In a location containing an AI Custom Field open or add a List, Board, Calendar, or Table view.
  2. After adding the AI Custom Field as a column to your view, in the AI Custom Field column click the Generate button.
    • If there is not enough info to generate a summary or update, a message will display.
  3. ClickUp AI will generate the info. 
  4. Hover over the field to see the entire summary or update.
