Folder templates

Use Folder templates to quickly create new Folders and Subfolders in your Workspace. You can browse our collection of prebuilt templates or create and use your own.

What you'll need

  • Folder templates are available on plan.
  • Guests can't use Folder templates.
  • Members and above can create, edit, apply, and delete templates.
  • Folder templates include Sprints. 

Create a new Folder or Subfolder using a template

Create a new Folder or Subfolder from a template.

You'll need permission to access the Folder that was used to create the template. This includes private and deleted Folders.

To create a Folder or Subfolder from a template:

  1. In your Home Sidebar or Spaces Sidebar, hover over the Space or Folder in which you want to create a Folder or Subfolder.
  2. Click the plus icon and select Templates.
  3. In the Template Center, search for a template from your Workspace or use a template created by the ClickUp community. 
    • You can search by selecting Folder from the Template Types menu on the left.

  4. Click a Folder template to see more detail.
  5. Select Use Template
  6. Edit your new Folder or Subfolder's name, location, import options, and project date options.

    If you choose to include Custom Fields, Formula Fields will not be included.

  7. Click Use Template.

Apply a Folder template to an existing Folder

Apply a Folder template to an existing Folder.

Folder templates cannot be applied to Subfolders. They can only be applied to parent Folders.

Applying a template to an existing Folder will override its data.

To apply a Folder template to an existing Folder:

  1. In your Home Sidebar or Spaces Sidebar, right-click the Folder you want to apply your template to.
  2. Hover over Templates and select Apply a template.
  3. In the Template Center, select the template.
    • You can search by selecting Folder from the Template Types menu on the left.

  4. Click a Folder template to see more detail.
  5. Select Use Template
  6. Edit the Folder's name, location, import options, and project date options.

    If you choose to include Custom Fields, Formula Fields will not be included.

  7. Click Use Template.

Create a Folder template

To create a new Folder template:

  1. In your Home Sidebar or Spaces Sidebar, right-click the Folder or Subfolder.
  2. Hover over Templates, then click Save as Template
  3. Add a template name, description, tags, sharing options, and import options.
  4. Click Save Template.

Folder statuses are not included in templates if the statuses are inherited from its parent Space. If you want to use inherited statuses in new Folders, you can create a status template from the Space-level statuses.

Subfolder statuses are not included in templates if the statuses are inherited from its parent Folder. If you want to use inherited statuses in new Subfolders, you can create a status template from the parent Folder-level statuses. 

Update a Folder template

To update a Folder template:

  1. Create a new Folder or Subfolder from the template.
  2. Make all changes to the new Folder or Subfolder.
  3. In your Home Sidebar or Spaces Sidebar, right-click the Folder or Subfolder. 
  4. Hover over Templates, then click Update existing Template.
  5. Search for and select the Folder template that you want to update.
  6. In the lower-right corner, click Next.
    • Optionally, you can change the name or add a description and tags.
    • By default, the template is shared with all Workspace members and admins. You can edit the sharing settings.
    • By default, Automations, views, and most task properties are imported. 
      • You can click the Automations or Views toggle to off. 
      • In the Import options section, you can also select Customize import items to deselect specific task properties

  7. Click Save Template.

Delete a Folder template

If you don't need a template anymore, you can delete it. Deleting a Folder template is permanent and cannot be undone.

To delete a Folder template:

  1. In the upper-left corner, click your Workspace avatar.
  2. Click Templates.
  3. In the Template Center, search for and select the template you want to delete.
  4. In the open template next to the template name, click the ellipsis ... icon.
  5. Click Delete template
  6. To confirm, click Delete.
