You can create a Subfolder from scratch or convert an existing Folder to a Subfolder.

Create a Subfolder

There are multiple ways to create a Subfolder.

From your Home Sidebar

To create a Subfolder from your Home Sidebar in ClickUp 4.0 or Sidebar in ClickUp 3.0:

  1. Hover over the Folder you want to create a Folder in and click the plus icon.
  2. Select Folder.

  3. Name and customize the Folder. You can add a description, update its statuses, use a template, or make it private.
  4. Click Create.

From a Folder's location header

To create a Subfolder from a Folder's location header:

  1. Open any view in a Folder.
  2. At the top, right-click the Folder name in ClickUp 4.0 or click the ellipsis ... icon in ClickUp 3.0.
  3. Hover over Create new and select Folder.
  4. Name and customize the Folder. You can add a description, update its statuses, use a template, or make it private.
  5. Click Create.

Convert a Folder to a Subfolder

There are multiple ways to convert an existing Folder to a Subfolder.

Using drag and drop

In your Home Sidebar in ClickUp 4.0 or Sidebar in ClickUp 3.0, convert a Folder to a Subfolder by dragging and dropping it into another Folder.

By moving it

To convert a Folder to a Subfolder by moving it:

  1. In your Home Sidebar in ClickUp 4.0 or Sidebar in ClickUp 3.0, hover over the Folder and click the ellipsis ... icon.
    • Alternatively, right-click the Folder.
  2. Hover over Move.
  3. Browse for and select a Folder. The Folder you select will become your current Folder's parent.

Convert a Subfolder to a Folder

There are multiple ways to convert an existing Subfolder to a Folder.

Using drag and drop

In your Home Sidebar in ClickUp 4.0 or Sidebar in ClickUp 3.0, convert a Subfolder to a Folder by dragging and dropping it into a Space.

By moving it

To convert a Subfolder to a Folder by moving it:

  1. In your Home Sidebar in ClickUp 4.0 or Sidebar in ClickUp 3.0, hover over the Subfolder and click the ellipsis ... icon.
    • Alternatively, right-click the Subfolder.
  2. Hover over Move.
  3. Browse for and select a Space.
  4. The Subfolder will become a Folder inside the Space you selected.
