Chat with Brain
ClickUp Brain AI refers to everything that uses AI in the ClickUp platform. A primary way you interact with Brain AI is through Brain.
The fastest way to learn about Brain is by chatting with it using natural language. If Brain has a question, it'll ask you to clarify.
When you open Brain from the AI Command Bar, location headers, or AI Hub, you'll see the following options:

Start chatting with Brain. Type your message. Or, click the microphone icon to use Talk to Text to transcribe your voice. |
| @mention | Type @ to mention tasks, Docs, people, Agents, Teams, or Channels that you want Brain to focus on. |

Click the plus icon to select an item, connected app, or location for Brain to focus on. For example:

| Upload files |
Click the plus icon, then Upload files. Or drag and drop a file. You can ask Brain to edit or answer questions about an image, analyze PDFs, spreadsheets, Docs, and other file types. |
| Saved prompts | Click the prompt icon to save or reuse a prompt. |
| AI model selector | By default, Max is your AI model. You can also choose other premium Claude, ChatGPT, and Gemini models. |
| Talk to Text | Click the microphone icon to convert your voice to text completely hands-free. Use it when searching the web, composing an email, or writing a Doc. |

Send or Stop generating a response |
Type your message, then click the Send icon to deliver it to Brain. Click the Stop icon while Brain is thinking to stop it. |
Suggestions
Throughout the modal, Brain suggests ways it can help you with your work. Click around to find out what Brain can do!
Close Brain
To close Brain:
- In the upper-right corner, click the double-arrow icon.
Open, rename, or delete a chat
To open, rename, or delete a chat:
- Open Brain from the AI Command Bar or location headers.
- In the upper-left corner, click the chat's name or New Chat.
- Click a conversation to open it, or hover over it to access the rename and delete options.
You can also save chats with Brain from a task comment or Chat thread.
To save a Brain chat from these locations:
- Chat with Brain in a task comment or Chat thread.
- After Brain responds, click Save & continue in Ask AI.
- The chat opens in Brain and is saved.
Memory
Manage what Brain knows about you, including your preferences, context, and working style. The more you tell Brain, the more useful Brain becomes.
Brain saves your entire chat history. The more you use it, the smarter it gets. Preferences, decisions, and context from past conversations carry forward automatically.

To manage your memories and preferences:
- Open Brain.
- In the upper-right corner, click the Memory icon.

Select one of these options:
Option Description Bring your memories from another AI Bring everything you've taught ChatGPT, Claude, or any other AI into Brain. Nickname By default, this is the name in your profile. It can be edited at any time. Your Role If you have a role set in your profile, you'll see it here. You can also fill it in or leave it blank.
Brain uses your role to tailor every response.
My Preferences Let Brain know your preferences by chatting or by hovering over this section and clicking Edit Preferences. People I work with A list of people you interact with or collaborate with.
Brain uses these contacts for better context. You can edit your people in your preferences.
Examples of helpful preferences
Here are some preferences that can prevent multiple follow-up questions from Brain:
- Always answer concisely.
- Check with me before posting comments.
- Create tasks in List A unless I specify.
- When we have a software release, we refer to it as "shipping."
- Sydney is in charge of posting on social media.
- Never use emojis.
- Format task descriptions with bullet points.
Deactivate or activate your preferences
If you have preferences saved, you control whether or not Brain can access them. Turning off your preferences is temporary, and nothing is deleted.
To deactivate or activate your preferences:
- Open Brain from the AI Command Bar, location headers, or AI Hub.
- To the right of My Preferences, click the toggle off or on.
