Use Relationship Custom Fields with Custom Field Manager

You can view, create, and edit Relationship Custom Fields from the Custom Field Manager.

What you'll need

  • Owners and admins can access the Custom Field Manager.
  • Members and guests with the Manage Custom Fields Custom Permission can access Custom Field Manager.
  • Custom Field Manager is available on all ClickUp plans.
  • The Custom Field Manager is only available on ClickUp 3.0.
  • The options to merge and move Custom Fields are available on the Enterprise Plan.

Available Relationships

The following Relationships can be used with Custom Field Manager:

  • Tasks linked in a Tasks Custom Field (with the Relationships ClickApp turned off).
  • Tasks linked with the Relationships ClickApp turned on, including:
    • Any task in the Workspace Relationships
    • List to List Relationships

Dependency relationships (where tasks are linked, waiting on, or blocking other tasks) are not displayed in the Custom Field Manager.

You can't move, merge, or convert Relationship Custom Fields.

Create Relationship Custom Fields

You can create Custom Relationships or Tasks Custom Fields using Custom Field Manager.

The options and steps are different depending on if you're using the Relationships ClickApp.

Relationships ClickApp turned on

With the Relationships ClickApp turned on, you can create Custom Relationships from Custom Field Manager.

From the Custom Field Manager:

  1. From the Sidebar, click All Custom Fields or select a specific location.

    To create a List to List Custom Relationship, you must select a List in the Custom Field Manager Sidebar.

  2. Click + Create field in the top right corner.
  3. Select Relationship or Tasks.

    When the Relationship ClickApp is turned on, the Tasks option creates an Any task in the Workspace Custom Relationship.

  4. Set the Relationship name.
  5. Choose to add Relationship Columns (formerly rollup fields) by checking Create rollup fields.

    Only List to List Relationships support using Custom Fields as Relationship Columns.

  6. Click Create field.

Relationships ClickApp turned off

When the Relationships ClickApp is turned off, you can create Tasks Custom Fields from Custom Field Manager.

Create a Tasks Custom Field

From the Custom Field Manager:

  1. From the Sidebar, click All Custom Fields or select a specific location.
  2. Click + Create field in the top right corner.
  3. Select Tasks.
  4. Set the Field name.
  5. Click Create field.

If you create a Tasks Custom Field, then enable the Relationships ClickApp, your Tasks Custom Field will be displayed as an Any task in the Workspace Custom Relationship.

List to List Custom Relationships

You can't see or use a List to List Relationship with the Relationships ClickApp turned off.

Edit Relationship Custom Fields

You can edit existing Relationship Custom Fields using Custom Field Manager.

Available options include:

  • Name: Update the name of the field.
  • Description: Give a Custom Field a meaningful description to help others understand how it's used.
  • Field type: This option will always display Relationship. You can't convert Relationship Custom Fields to other Custom Field types.
  • Related to: Displays the type of Custom Relationship. You can't change the type of Custom Relationship.
    • Any task in the Workspace Custom Relationship displays the following text:
    • Related to any task in your Workspace.
    • List to List Custom Relationship displays the following text:
    • Related to task from a specific list and the name of the other List.
  • Location: Displays the specific Workspace, Space(s), Folder(s), and List(s) where your Custom Fields exists on tasks. You can't add, move, or remove Relationship Custom Fields from other locations.
  • Settings: Set your preferences for the Custom Field, including:
    • Required in Tasks: The field must have a value set when a task is create. Required Custom Fields are always pinned.
    • Required in Subtasks: The field must have a value set on subtasks.
    • Visible to Guests: Guests can view the field and values.
  • Delete: Remove the Custom Field from your Workspace.

From the Custom Field Manager:

  1. Click on a Custom Field to open the editor.
  2. Set your preferences.
  3. The Custom Field will be updated instantly.
