Set a default task template for Lists

Automatically apply a template to all new tasks created in a List.

What you'll need

  • Default task templates for Lists can be set on every ClickUp plan.
  • Guests cannot set default task templates for Lists.

  • If a default task template is private, only users with access to it will have it applied to newly-created tasks.
  • Tasks created from Forms override default task templates for Lists.

Set a default task template

Set an existing task template that is applied to all new tasks created in a List:

  1. From the Sidebar, hover over the List and click the ellipsis ... icon.
  2. Select Templates.
  3. Click Default Task Template.
Screenshot of the default task template option in the Sidebar.
  4. Select a task template.
  5. Click Use Template.
  6. The template will be applied to all new tasks created in the List.

The default task template is automatically applied to tasks you're drafting in two scenarios:

  • When you create a task in List view by clicking + New task under any group.
Screenshot of the create task option in List view.
  • When you select a List with a default task template set when quick-creating a task.

Remove a default task template

To create blank tasks by default or set a new default task template for your List, remove the current default task template.

Removing a default task template doesn't delete the template or remove it from any existing tasks.

To remove the current default task template:

  1. In the Sidebar, hover over the List and click the ellipsis ... icon.
  2. Select Templates.
  3. Hover over the default task template and click the x icon to the right.
  4. Confirm you want to remove the default task template by clicking Remove.
  5. New tasks won't have any task template applied.
