Create and edit subtasks in List and Board view

Create and edit subtasks directly from List and Board views.

What you'll need

  • You can create and edit subtasks in List and Board view on every plan.
  • Everyone, including guests with edit and full permissions, can create and edit subtasks in List and Board view.

Create a subtask from List view

To create a subtask from a List view:

  1. If the task does not have any subtasks, hover over the task and click the Create subtask icon. Image of the create subtask button in List view
    • If the task has one or more expanded subtasks, click the arrow icon next to the subtask icon and select Create subtask to create a new subtask.

    • If the task has one or more collapsed subtasks, hover over the Create subtask icon to display the plus icon. Click the plus icon to create a new subtask.
  2. Name your subtask.
  3. Add an assignee, due date, or any other additional information.
  4. Press Enter on PC or Return on Mac to save.

    For more granular subtask organization, you can arrange subtasks into their own hierarchy using nested subtasks.

Create a subtask from Board view

To create a subtask from a Board view:

  1. Hover over the task card and click + Add task icon.

  2. Name your subtask.
  3. Add an assignee, due date, or any other additional information.
  4. Press Enter on PC or Return on Mac to save.

Display subtasks

Click Subtasks at the top of a List or Board view to display the following options:

  • Collapse all: Hide subtasks from view. To show an individual task's subtasks, click the dropdown arrow to the left of the task.
  • Expand all: Expand subtasks directly beneath their parent tasks. 
  • As separate tasks: Display subtasks as separate items from their parent tasks. Select this option if you want subtasks to appear in your filtering results

Bulk edit subtasks

Use the Bulk Action Toolbar to quickly take action on tasks and subtasks. Before bulk editing, make sure subtasks are set to Expand All in the upper-right corner of the view. 

To bulk edit subtasks in List View:

  1. Hover to the left of the subtasks and click the selector buttons. 
  2. Click one of the bulk action options on the Bulk Action Toolbar. 

In Board view, you can either:

  • Hover over an expanded subtask card and click the selector button in the upper-right.

  • Click the ellipsis ... in the upper-right corner of a column. Then click Select All to select all tasks and subtasks within the column. Then, click the bulk action option in the Bulk Action Toolbar.

Convert tasks to subtasks in List view

Drag and drop a task onto another to convert it into a subtask. You can then rearrange subtasks by dragging and dropping them in the order you want.
