Subtask sidebar

Easily navigate between a task and its subtasks using the subtask sidebar.

In the upper-left corner click the Open Subtask sidebar button.

  • Click on any task to open it.
  • Click + Add subtask to create a subtask.
  • Hover over any subtask to:
    • Click the ellipsis ... to open the task settings menu.
    • Click the plus icon to add nested subtasks.

The Open Subtask sidebar button only displays when the task has subtasks.

Subtasks section

From a parent task, you can create, update, and reorder subtasks from the subtasks section.

To find he subtasks section:

  1. Scroll past the task description.
  2. Click the Subtasks tab.
  3. Click + New task to create the first subtask.

The following table describs the options available to manage subtasks:

Setting Description
Progress bar Displays how many subtasks are done or closed.
Assigned to me Displays the subtasks assigned to you
Sort

Sort subtasks using the following options:

  • Manual: Drag and drop subtasks to manually order them.
  • Status: Displays tasks by status from open to closed, or closed to open.
  • Priority: Displays tasks by priority from urgent to low, low to urgent. Tasks with no priority set are always displayed at the bottom of the table.
  • Name: Displays tasks in ascending or descending alphabetical order.
Suggest subtasks

Use ClickUp AI to suggest subtasks based on the parent task's title, description, and comments.

Create and update subtasks from the subtasks section

To create and update subtasks:

  1. Click + New task to add a new subtask.
  2. Set the status using the status icon.
  3. Hover over a subtask to:
    • Select one or more subtasks to use the bulk action toolbar.
    • Click the plus icon to create nested subtasks.
    • Click the tag icon to create, apply, or remove tags.
    • Click the pencil icon to rename the task.
  4. On the upper-right, click the plus icon to show or hide fields.

Custom Fields in subtasks

From a parent task, you can set and edit available Custom Fields on subtasks.

Tasks and subtasks inherit Custom Fields from their List, Folder, Space, and Workspace.

You can set different Custom Fields values on subtasks, and between subtasks and their parent tasks.

To display and set subtask Custom Fields:

  1. Open a task with subtasks.
  2. Click the Subtasks tab below the task description.
  3. Click the plus icon to open the fields menu.
  4. Check the fields and Custom Fields to display them in the table.
  5. Set fields for each subtask.

    For Dropdown and Label Custom Fields, you can also add and edit the available values.

  6. Or, select multiple subtasks and set the fields for all of them using the bulk action toolbar.
