Remap subtask due dates using task templates

Do you use task templates and need to update your task and subtasks' dates?

Rather than changing every subtask's start and due dates manually, you can remap them when you apply your task template.

When you apply a task template, you can adjust all subtasks' and nested subtasks' start and due dates by changing the parent task's due date!

The subtasks' dates will be increased or decreased relative to the change you make to the parent task's due date.

What you'll need

  • Remapping subtasks dates only applies to subtasks included in the task template.

  • It's not possible to remap dates when creating a task from a template using the + Task quick create option.

Create a task template

First, you'll need a task template that includes at least one subtask to remap its dates. For example, you could do the following:

  1. Create a parent task with a due date of July 10.

  2. Add two subtasks with start and due dates:

    • Subtask 1 start date: July 1

    • Subtask 1 due date: July 6

    • Subtask 2 start date: July 5

    • Subtask 2 due date: July 10

  3. In the upper-right corner, click the ellipsis ... icon.

  4. Select Templates and click Save as Template.
  5. Name the template.
    • If you're customizing the import options, ensure you include start dates, due dates, and subtasks.
  6. In the lower-right corner, click Save Template.

Now that we have a template with subtasks available for use, let's apply the template and remap the subtasks' dates.

Apply your task template

When you apply your task template, you'll have the opportunity to remap subtask dates. For example, you could do the following:

  1. Open a new or existing task.

  2. In the upper-right corner, click the ellipsis ... icon.

  3. Select Templates and click Browse Templates.
  4. Select the task template you just created and click Use Template.

  5. Click Remap dates.

  6. Set the parent task's due date to July 20.

You cannot remap subtasks by start dates.

  7. In the lower-right corner, click Use Template to apply it to the task.

  8. The subtask due dates will be adjusted accordingly:

    • Subtask 1 start date: July 11

    • Subtask 1 due date: July 16

    • Subtask 2 start date: July 15

    • Subtask 2 due date: July 20

The parent task due date was moved 10 days into the future, so both subtask due dates are also adjusted to 10 days into the future.
