Set each parent task to use the dates of its subtasks.
The parent task's start and due dates will be updated instantly and automatically maintained over time, until you manually override the dates.
With the sync dates with subtasks option activated, the parent task's:
- Start date reflects the earliest start date of its subtasks.
- Due date reflects the latest due date of its subtasks.
- Duration reflects the full span between those dates.
Feature availability and limits vary by plan and user role. Learn more
The sync persists until you manually override the parent task's dates or turn the setting off.
Activate or deactivate parent and subtask date sync
There are several ways to start or stop syncing parent and subtask dates.
Once activated:
- The parent task start and due dates will be updated instantly to reflect the earliest start date and latest due date of it's subtasks.
- When subtask dates are updated, the parent task will be automatically updated accordingly.
- Updating the parent start or due dates from any view or the task itself will disable the sync.
- In Gantt view, the parent task's bar is displayed with corners on the lower-left and lower-right.
From Gantt view
To start or stop syncing parent and subtasks in Gantt view:
- Right-click on a task with subtasks.
- Click Sync dates with subtasks to activate or deactivate the sync.

From a parent task
To start or stop syncing parent and subtasks from a parent task:
- In the upper-right corner, click the ellipsis ... icon.
- Click Sync dates with subtasks to activate or deactivate the sync.
From your Home Sidebar
When you start the sync on a List from your Home Sidebar, existing parent tasks in that List are converted to synced behavior and future parent tasks in the List use synced dates by default.
To activate the sync on a List from your Home Sidebar:
- Right-click the List and hover over More.
- Click Subtask date sync to activate or deactivate the sync.
Marketing campaign example
In the following example, a marketing campaign is organized with:
- A parent task for the Feature Launch Campaign.
- Three subtasks for Content creation, Social media posts, and Email marketing.
The dates on the tasks are out of alignment:
- The Content Creation subtask is scheduled before the start date of its parent task.
- The Launch Campaign parent task is due 3 days after the social media and email marketing subtasks.

Nested subtasks
When you activate Sync dates with subtasks on a top-level task, every intermediate subtask between it and the lowest level also syncs dates from its children, so dates propagate all the way up the task hierarchy.
For example, with a Phase (parent) > Milestone (subtask) > Task (nested subtask) structure, adding dates to the tasks flows up to the Milestone and up to the Phase. You don't have to set dates only at the lowest level.
You can turn off the sync at any level. For instance, if you only want the Phase to sync from the Milestone, turn off sync on the Milestone and add dates directly to it.
