What are direct messages?

Direct messages allow you to privately message individuals or groups of people in your Workspace using Chat.

Direct messages are perfect for one-on-one communication or any scenario in which sending a message to a Channel is unnecessary.

Send a direct message

Start a direct message with up to nine other people!

Open a direct message

In ClickUp 4.0, you can open a direct message from your Home Sidebar or the Chat Sidebar by clicking it.

In ClickUp 3.0, you can open a direct message from Chat by clicking it.

Close a direct message

Finished with a conversation? Close the direct message.

See conversation history and recipient details

When you open a direct message, you'll be viewing the conversation history.

If you're conversing with one person, you'll see the Calendar and Assigned Tasks tabs in addition to the Chat tab at the top of the conversation:

  • Chat: View your direct message history with the person or group.
  • Calendar: View the calendar of the person you're messaging. You can move through days using the arrows at the top.
  • Assigned Tasks: View all tasks assigned to the person you're messaging in a customizable, searchable, and filterable List view.

Take action on direct messages

Mark direct messages as unread, move them to other sections, and more.

There are several ways to open a direct message's settings:

  • In your Home Sidebar, right-click the direct message. Or, hover over it and click the ellipsis ... icon.
  • In the Chat Sidebar, right-click the direct message.
  • In the upper-left corner of an open direct message, click the ellipsis ... menu.

The following options are available:

Option Description
Mark as unread/read Mark the direct message unread or read.
Copy link

Copy the URL. 

This option is only available in ClickUp 3.0.
View Profile Open the details sidebar to see helpful information about the person or group.
Favorite

Favorite the direct message or add it to one of your Home Sidebar sections.

This option is only available in ClickUp 4.0. In ClickUp 3.0, use the Pin option to pin the direct message to Chat's sidebar.
Pin/Unpin

Pin or unpin the direct message to Chat's sidebar.

This option is only available in ClickUp 3.0. In ClickUp 4.0, use the Favorite option to favorite the direct message.
Move to section

Move the direct message to another section in Chat's sidebar.

This option is only available in ClickUp 3.0. In ClickUp 4.0, use the Favorite option.
Close DM

Remove the direct message from your Home Sidebar in ClickUp 4.0 or Chat's sidebar in ClickUp 3.0. If anyone sends a new message, it will reopen the direct message.

Can't remember a decision? Can't find that one thread reply? Ask AI about your past direct message conversations and save the time scrolling! 

To ask AI about your conversation, click Ask AI in the upper-right corner.

Start a SyncUp from a direct message

Collaborate live with your colleagues!

To start a SyncUp with everyone in the direct message, click the phone icon in the upper-right corner.

To view past recordings or copy the SyncUp link, click the expand icon next to the phone icon.

Customize how direct messages are displayed

Sort messages, choose how many are displayed, and more:

To open a direct message's details sidebar:

  1. Open a direct message.
  2. Hover over the floating sidebar on the right and click Settings or the Settings icon.
  3. From the details sidebar, you can take the following actions:
    • Pin: Pin the direct message to Chat's sidebar. This option is only available in ClickUp 3.0.
    • Profile: Open their Profile. This option is not available for group messages.
    • Priorities: View important tasks the person is assigned to. This option is not available for group messages. 
    • SyncUp: Start a SyncUp with everyone in the direct message.
    • View their online status, email, their local time, and who they report to. This option is not available for group direct messages.
    • Files: View or open any files uploaded in your conversation.
    • Mark as unread: Mark the direct message unread.
    • Favorite Add the direct message to your Favorites or one of your Home Sidebar sections. This option is only available in ClickUp 4.0.
    • Copy link: Copy the URL to the direct message. This option is only available in ClickUp 3.0.
    • Move to section: Move the direct message to another section in Chat's sidebar. This option is only available in ClickUp 3.0.
    • Close DM: Close the direct message. It will be reopened if anyone sends a new message.
