Add tasks and Docs to a Whiteboard

Add tasks and Docs to your Whiteboard and edit them without leaving the canvas. Tasks and Docs have the same functionality as the other Whiteboard items, you can duplicate, connect, and draw on them!

Directly connect your ideas to your work by converting Shapes, Sticky Notes, or Text boxes into tasks. 

What you'll need

  • Whiteboards are available on every ClickUp plan.
  • Guests can use Whiteboards, but cannot create new ones.
  • Whiteboards created using the previous Whiteboards version will not be converted to the new version. 

Add a task

Tasks and Docs on a Whiteboard are excluded when the Whiteboard is exported.

You can add any task or subtask to your Whiteboard.

To add an existing task:

  1. From the main menu at the bottom of the Whiteboard, select the Task icon.
    • You can also use the shortcut T.
  2. Select the Tasks tab.
  3. In the Tasks modal, search for a task by name, ID, or URL, or browse recently viewed tasks.
  4. Click to add the task or subtask to your Whiteboard.

Update or open a task

To update or open a task from the Whiteboard:

  1. In select mode, click the task. To use select mode, from the main menu at the bottom of the bottom of the Whiteboard click the Select item icon. Or press the hotkey V.
    • You can change the task's name, status, priority, or assignee.
    • To open the task: Click the task then above the task, click View

Create a new task

You can create a new task or subtask from your Whiteboard. After saving it in a List, you can add it to your Whiteboard.

To create a new task:

  1. From the main menu at the bottom of the bottom of the Whiteboard, select the Tasks icon. 
    • You can also use the shortcut T.
  2. Select the Tasks tab.
  3. In the lower-left of the Tasks modal, click Create new.
  4. Select a List.
  5. Name the task.
    • You can add an assignee.
    • You can also update and manage Custom Fields if any are in the location.
  6. Click Create task.
    • You can add the task to your Whiteboard after creating it.

Convert an item to a task

To directly connect your ideas to your work, you can create a task from a Shape, Sticky Note, or Text box!

Add a Doc

You can add any Doc to your Whiteboard.

To add an existing Doc:

  1. From the main menu at the bottom of the Whiteboard, select the Doc icon.
    • You can also use the shortcut T.
  2. Select the Docs tab.
  3. In the Docs modal, search for a task by name, ID, or URL, or browse recently viewed Docs.
  4. Click to add the Doc to your Whiteboard.

Update or open a Doc

You can fully update a Doc from your Whiteboard!

Create a new Doc

You can add a Doc to your Whiteboard and fully edit it while brainstorming. 

To add a Doc:

  1. From the main menu at the bottom of the bottom of the Whiteboard, select the Tasks icon. 
    • You can also use the shortcut T.
  2. Select the Docs tab.
  3. In the lower-left of the Docs modal, click Create new.
  4. Select a List.
  5. Name the Doc.
    • You can name the Doc. 
    • Docs are private by default on our Business Plan and up. You can make the Doc public. 
  6. Click Create Doc.
    • You can add the Doc to your Whiteboard after creating it.
