Use the Webhook received Trigger to start a ClickUp Automation when an external app sends a request. Apps like Stripe, GitHub, or a custom integration can send data into ClickUp to run your Automation, with no third-party connector in between.
If you want an Automation to start from an external app, use the Webhook received Trigger. This Trigger starts a standard or Chat Automation when an external app sends a POST request to ClickUp. To send data out of ClickUp instead, use the Call webhook Action.
The Webhook received Trigger is available on Business plans and above. Feature availability and limits vary by plan and user role. Learn more
What is the Webhook received Trigger?
The Webhook received Trigger lets an external app send information into ClickUp to start an Automation.
The information the external app sends is the payload. ClickUp generates a unique URL for each Automation that uses this Trigger. When an app sends a POST request to that URL, the Automation runs.
Each URL is tied to one Automation and doesn't expire.
Activate the Webhook received ClickApp
Before admins can create Automations with this Trigger, the ClickApp must be activated:
- In the upper-left corner, click your Workspace name and select Apps.
- Search for and toggle on Webhook received.
How authentication works
ClickUp creates one API key for your Workspace. Every webhook URL in the Workspace uses the same API key. Send the API key in the authorization header of every request to the webhook URL. Requests without a valid API key are rejected.
By default, only Workspace owners and admins can view the API key.
In the Trigger section, use Show to view the API key or Copy to copy it. You can also find API key under the Webhook received ClickApp card and use Show or Copy there.
Create an Automation with the Webhook received Trigger
From a Space, Folder, Subfolder, List, or Chat Channel:
- In the upper-right corner, click the robot icon.
- Click Create Automation.
- Select the Webhook received Trigger. A unique Webhook URL will be generated and your Workspace API key will be displayed.
- Click Copy beside Webhook URL to copy the URL. Click Copy beside API key to copy the key.
- In Sample payload, paste a sample JSON body. ClickUp turns its fields into variables you can insert in the Actions below.
- Choose an available Action.
- Click Create.
- To run the Automation, send a POST request to the webhook URL.
- Send the API key as the raw value in the
Authorizationheader. A valid request returns202. - In the Trigger section, click Regenerate beside Webhook URL to create a new URL. The old URL stops working and returns
404.
Incoming requests are capped at 1 MB. Requests are rate limited to 60 per minute per API token and 200 per minute per Workspace.
Rotate the API key
To rotate the Workspace API key:
- In the upper-left corner, click your Workspace name and select Apps.
- Search for and select Webhook received.
- Under API key, click Rotate.
- The new key applies to every webhook URL in the Workspace. The old key returns
401for each URL.
Update the API key in every external app that sends requests to the Workspace.
