Brand new to AI Agents? This video will help you get started!

Autopilot Agents excel at repetitive, time-intensive workflows like these:

  • If meeting notes contain action items, an Autopilot Agent creates associated tasks with deadlines.
  • When Docs contain complex data, an Autopilot Agent creates summaries and extracts actionable insights.
  • A Form collects job applications, an Autopilot Agent evaluates applicants' qualifications against requirements, and writes a summary in the related task.
  • A team adds progress updates to a task, an Autopilot Agent provides contextualized status reports to a leadership Channel.
  • When sprint planning begins, an Autopilot Agent summarizes relevant Confluence documentation on feature requirements.

Where can I use Autopilot Agents?

Autopilot Agents can be created in multiple Chats, Spaces, Folders, and Lists across your Workspace. Autopilot Agents can be configured to access Workspace info, our public-facing help articles, and certain external apps.

Types of Autopilot Agents

Autopilot Agents range from simple to complex. Here are the types of Autopilot Agents we offer:

Get to know Autopilot Agents

Our Autopilot Agents have the following characteristics:

  • Autonomy: After Autopilot Agents are activated, they make decisions based on the instructions, tools, and data they can access.
  • Reactivity: They perceive their environment and respond to changes in real time, allowing them to adapt to new situations. For example, they can answer questions asked in a Channel.
  • Proactivity: Autopilot Agents take initiative and perform actions to achieve their goals, rather than just reacting to external stimuli.
  • Interaction: They can interact with the locations and items in your Workspace that they can access. They can also interact with people by responding to Channel messages.
  • Goal-oriented: Autopilot Agents are designed to achieve specific objectives. This guides their decision-making processes.

How do Autopilot Agents work?

Autopilot Agents use the logic of ClickUp Automations. They only take action when triggered by specific events, if any specified conditions are met, using their instructions, knowledge, and tools.

This table explains how each part of an Autopilot Agent functions:

These settings work together in the following way:

Parts of a Custom Autopilot Agent Description
Triggers

An event that happens in the Autopilot Agent's location.

For example, a Chat message is posted in the Channel where the Autopilot Agent is created.

Conditions

Something that must be true for the trigger to work.

For example, only trigger if the message is a question for HR.

Some Autopilot Agents do not have a Condition.

Actions

What you're asking the Autopilot Agent to do.

For example, the Autopilot Agent answers the questions.

Instructions

Tell your Autopilot Agent exactly what to do and how to use the selected tools and knowledge.

For example, search the Workspace for relevant info and then post your answer in a thread.

Knowledge

You specify the Workspace items and locations your Autopilot Agent can access. You can also allow an Autopilot Agent to access our public-facing help articles and certain external apps set up via Workspace Connected Search.

Check or uncheck the boxes in the Workspace Data and Other Sources sections to specify which data and sources are accessible.

Currently, Autopilot Agents cannot search the web.

Tools

Tools are essential. Without at least one tool, the Autopilot Agent won't work.

In the example above, the Autopilot Agent's Action is to answer questions posted in a Chat. The Reply to thread tool is added by default and required so the Autopilot Agent can answer the questions in a Chat thread.

How are Autopilot Agents different than ClickUp Automations?

Although Autopilot Agents and ClickUp Automations use similar logic, they're different in these important ways:

  • Automations: Use Automations when you need predictable, rule-based actions that consistently follow specific triggers and conditions.
  • Autopilot Agents: Use Autopilot Agents when you need intelligent assistance that can handle ambiguity, make contextual decisions, or create original content.
