Permanently erase all Chat messages in your Workspace after a set period of time.
As soon as you select a retention period, messages that are older than the set retention time will be immediately deleted. Data deleted according to your Chat data retention setting is permanent and cannot be recovered. This includes attachments.
What you'll need
- Chat data retention settings are available on the Enterprise Plan.
- Admins and owners can change Chat data retention settings.
Edit Chat data retention
Chat data retention affects all messages and their attachments in every Channel, direct message, and group message in your Workspace.
Chat data deletions run once per day in accordance with your retention settings.
When a parent message is deleted, its replies will also be deleted.
By default, messages are not deleted.
To edit your Workspace's Chat data retention settings:
- In the upper-left corner, click your Workspace avatar.
- Select Settings.
- In the left sidebar, click Security & Permissions.
- Next to Chat data retention, click the dropdown menu and select the length of retention:
- Never expires: Messages are not deleted. This is the default setting.
- 30 days: Messages are deleted after 30 days.
- 90 days: Messages are deleted after 90 days.
- 180 days: Messages are deleted after 180 days.

360 days: Messages are deleted after 360 days.
- Chat messages will be deleted after the set amount of time. Messages that are older than the set retention time will be immediately deleted.
Audit log
All changes made to the Chat data retention setting are captured in audit logs.
Backups
ClickUp Workspaces are backed up on a regular basis. Once a chat message has been deleted, it may take up to an additional 30 days to be removed from Workspace backups.
