Format text using the text toolbar

Use the text toolbar and settings to create engaging and consistent content for any audience.

Format text with elements that stand out like banners, headings, highlights, code blocks, and pull quotes. Insert buttons and dividers to add style or use a sticky table of contents to browse long pages.

Use content blocks to organize and move paragraphs and content around on the page. You can collapse headings to show or hide sections of content.

You can also use keyboard shortcuts or /Slash Commands to format text.

To open the text toolbar:

  1. Select text.

  2. Use the toolbar to adjust your text formatting.

Text toolbar settings

The following table describes the settings available from the text toolbar:

Improve None Uses ClickUp AI to improve your text with a prebuilt prompt.
Edit None Ask ClickUp AI to improve your text with a custom prompt or prebuilt tools.
Bulleted List Cmd + Shift + 9 Ctrl + Shift + 9 Set your text to an unordered list using bullet points for each item.
All lists None Click the arrow to the right of the bulleted list button to select other lists.
Numbered List Cmd + Shift + 7 Ctrl + Shift + 7 Create an ordered list using numbered items.
Toggle list None Create a toggle list to collapse and expand items.
Checklist Cmd + Shift + 8 Ctrl + Shift + 8 Create a list of items you can check to mark as done.

Convert the selected text into headings, banners, a code block, a standard size quote block or a larger pull quote block.
This button is labelled as the current formatting of the selected text. If multiple formats are selected, the button is labelled Text.
Text color None Select the text color, highlights, or badge color for the selected text.
Bold Cmd + B Ctrl + B Make your text bold.
Italics Cmd + I Ctrl + I Italicize your text.
Underline Cmd + U Ctrl + U Underline your text.
Strikethrough None Add a strikethrough line to your text.
Inline code formatting Cmd + Shift + C Ctrl + Shift + C

Format your text as inline code.

You can also use backticks `text` to apply inline code formatting.

Alignment None

Align your text to the left, center, or right.

Increase or decrease indentation.

For content in a table, you can also align text to the top, middle, or bottom of one or more cells.

Insert a link Cmd + K Ctrl + K Make the selected text into a hyperlink.
Create task Cmd + Option + T Ctrl + Alt + T

  • Create a subtask (from task descriptions only)

Text toolbar settings by location

The following table describes actions available on the text toolbar in specific locations:

Options include:

Docs Comment Add a comment about the selected text.
Create a subpage Click the page icon to create a subpage in the existing Doc with the selected text as the page name.

Text toolbar settings

At the far right of the text toolbar, click the ellipsis menu to open the text toolbar settings menu.

The following table describes the settings available for the text toolbar:

Default: The toolbar only displays above the selected text.

Pinned: The toolbar always displays at the top of the text field.

Undo Cmd + Z Ctrl + Z Undo your last action.

Insert content:

  • Create a new task.
  • Create a new subtask.
  • Upload an image.
  • Add a divider.
  • Add a toggle list.

  • Embed a YouTube video.
Clear format None Remove formatting from the selected text.
Copy Markdown None Copy your text with Markdown formatting.
