Create, apply, and update Doc templates

Save Docs and pages as templates for frequently used layouts or processes in your Workspace.

A wiki is a Doc that's prioritized as the source of truth. Unless specified, anything that applies to Docs also applies to wikis.

Manage Doc templates

A Doc template is a duplicate of an entire Doc, including its settings and pages. You can also create page templates. 

Templates are managed in the Template Center. You can access the Template Center from the toolbar, an open Doc, or Docs Hub

Owners and admins can also access templates from the Workspace settings menu.

From the Template Center you can do the following:

  • Apply a template to a new or existing Doc.
  • Create a template from an existing Doc.
  • Update any existing Doc template. 

Access the Template Center from Docs Hub

To access the Template Center from Docs Hub:

  1. Open Docs Hub.
  2. In the upper-right corner of the Hub expand the dropdown on the Create Doc button. 
  3. Select Browse Templates.
  4. Find and select the template.
  5. From the Use doc Template modal select a location from the dropdown.
  6. A new Doc with the template applied opens in your selected location. 

Apply a template to a Doc

When you access the Template Center from a Doc or Docs Hub, the template will apply to that Doc. You can also apply a template to a new Doc.

To apply a template to an existing Doc:

  1. From the Doc's ellipsis ... menu, select Browse Templates.
  2. Find and select the template.
    • From the Use Template modal, you can choose to edit the image, name, description, tags, or sharing options. 
  3. Click Use Template
  4. The template applies to the Doc you accessed the Template Center from. The template is added as a new page. 

To apply a template to a new Doc:

  1. In the upper-right corner of the toolbar, click the grid icon.
  2. From the Quick Action menu, select Apps then Template Center.  
  3. Find and select the template.
  4. From Use doc template modal select a Space, Folder, or List from the dropdown.
    • You can also rename the Doc.
  5. A new Doc with the template applied will be created in your selected location. 

Create a Doc template

To create a Doc template:

  1. From a Doc's ellipsis ... menu, select Save as Template.
  2.  From the Save as new doc Template modal, enter a name and choose sharing options.
  3. Click Save Template.
  4. Your template is saved in the Template Center. 

Update a Doc template

When you update a Doc template, the template settings will be overwritten. 

To update any existing template in the Template Center:

  1. In the upper-right corner of the toolbar, click the grid icon.
  2. From the Quick Action menu, select Apps then Template Center.  
  3. Find and select the template.
  4. Click Next.
  5. Update the Template settings. 
  6. Click Save Template

Delete a Doc template

Once you delete a template, it's gone forever.

To delete a Doc template:

  1. In the upper-right corner of the toolbar, click the grid icon.
  2. From the Quick Action menu, select Apps then Template Center.  
  3. Search for the template.
  4. From the template preview, select Delete Template.

Create a page template

To create a page template:

  1. From a Doc, expand the left sidebar.
  2. Click the ellipsis ... next to the page.
  3. Select Save as Template.
  4. From the Save as a new doc Template modal, type a name and choose sharing options.
  5. Click Save Template

 

Apply a page template

You can apply page templates to individual pages within Docs.

If the selected page is blank, page templates will overwrite the blank page. If the page already has content, the page template will be applied to a new, separate subpage.

To apply a page template from the left sidebar:

  1. From a Doc, expand the left sidebar.
  2. Create a new page, or click the ellipsis ... next to an existing page.
  3. Select Apply template.
  4. Find and select the template. Page templates are Doc template types.
    • From the Use Template modal, you can choose to edit the image, name, description, tags, or sharing options. 
  5. Click Use Template

Use a /Slash Command to apply a Doc template

To apply a Doc template using the /Slash Command:

  1. From an open Doc, type /temp and press Return or Enter.
  2. From the modal, select a recently used template or click Browse to search the Template Center.
  3. To apply the template to your Doc, select a recent template or choose one from the Template Center. Select one of the following:
    • Quick Use: Create a new Doc from the template with one click.
    • Select the template: See template details or customize the template. Then click Use Template.
