Create Dependency Relationships between tasks.

What you'll need

• Dependency Relationships are available on all plans.
• Everyone, including guests with edit or full permissions, can create task dependencies.
• Task dependencies are not available in the ClickUp mobile app.

Create Dependency Relationships from tasks

You can create dependencies from tasks. The experience will vary based on:

• The Relationships ClickApp is turned off using Task view 2.0.
• The Relationships ClickApp is turned on using Task view 2.0.
• Using task view 3.0.

Relationships ClickApp turned off

You can add Dependency Relationships to tasks when the Relationships ClickApp is turned off in Task view 2.0.

Using the Dependencies button

You can quickly create a Dependency Relationship from the Dependencies button on tasks.

1. Open a task.
2. From the upper-left corner of the task, click the Dependencies button.
   
3. Click the add task button for the type of Dependency Relationship you want to create:
   • Add waiting on task: Search or browse for another task that needs to be completed before this task.
   • Add task that is blocked: Search or browser for another task that can't be completed before this task.
   • Add linked task: Tasks that are related but not blocking or waiting on other tasks.

From the Task settings menu

You can create a Dependency Relationship from the Task settings menu.

1. Click the ellipsis ... to open the task settings menu.
2. Click Dependencies.
3. Click the add task button for the type of Dependency Relationship you want to create:
   
   • Add waiting on task: Search or browse for another task that needs to be completed before this task.
   • Add task that is blocked: Search or browser for another task that can't be completed before this task.
   • Add linked task: Tasks that are related but not blocking or waiting on other tasks.
4. To unlink a dependent task, click the x icon on the right of the task name.

Relationships ClickApp turned on

There are three ways to create Dependency Relationships when the Relationships ClickApp is turned on in Task view 2.0.

From the Relationships section

You can create dependencies in the Relationship section, below the task description.

1. Click the Add button to open the Add new Relationship menu.
2. Select Dependency.
3. Select Waiting on or Blocking.
4. Search or browse for a task in your Workspace.
5. Click a task to create a Dependency Relationship.
6. The Dependencies table is displayed in the Relationships section of Task view.

Add and remove waiting on or blocking tasks

You can add other waiting on or blocking tasks from the Dependency table in the Relationships section of Task view.

To unlink a dependent task, hover over the task in the Dependencies table, and click the x icon on the far right.

From the task settings menu

You can create a Dependency Relationship from the task settings menu.

1. Click the ellipsis... to open the task settings menu. 
2. Select Relationships, then Dependency.
3. Click the add task button for the type of Dependency Relationship you want to create:
   
   • Add waiting on task: Search or browse for another task that needs to be completed before this task.
   • Add task that is blocked: Search or browser for another task that can't be completed before this task.
   • Add linked task: Tasks that are related but not blocking or waiting on other tasks.
4. To unlink a dependent task, click the x icon on the right of the task name.

Using /Slash Commands

You can quickly create Dependency Relationships using /Slash Commands.

1. In the task description or comment, type /blocking,/waiting, or /link to.
2. Press Enter on PC or Return on Mac.
3. Search or browse for the task.

Dependency Relationships in Task view 3.0

Task view 3.0 has introduced several new features and UI updates! There are three ways to create dependencies from tasks in Task view 3.0.

Using the Create Relationship tab

From the Create Relationship tab:

1. To the left of the Activity section, click the plus icon. 
2. Select Waiting On or Blocking.
3. Search or browse for the task.

   

Add and remove waiting on or blocking tasks

You can add other waiting on or blocking tasks from the Blocking and Waiting on tabs.

To unlink a dependent task, hover over the task in the Blocking or Waiting on tab, and click the x icon on the far right.

Using the Task settings menu

From the Task settings menu:

1. In the top-right, click the ellipsis ... to open the Task settings menu.

2. Select Dependency.

3. Select Waiting on or Blocking.

4. Click a task to create a Dependency Relationship.

5. The Dependency Relationship is displayed in the Blocking or Waiting on tab.

Using /Slash Commands

You can quickly create Dependency Relationships using /Slash Commands.

1. In the task description or a comment, type /blocking,/waiting, or /link to.
2. Press Enter on PC or Return on Mac.
3. Search or browse for the task.
