Options include:
- Use tasks for reporting and high level collaboration. Use subtasks to represent each item of work.
- Use separate tasks for reporting and work items. Relate them by linking tasks or use relationships and dependencies.
- Use custom task types such as Milestones to different reporting tasks from the work to be done.
