Create Dependency Relationships between tasks.
What you'll need
- Dependency Relationships are available on all plans.
- Everyone, including guests with edit or full permissions, can create task Dependencies.
- Task Dependencies are not available in the ClickUp mobile app.
Create Dependency Relationships
There are several ways to create Dependency Relationships in a task.
From the Related section
From a task's Related section:
- Open the task and scroll down to the Related/Relate items section.
- In the upper-right corner of the section, click the plus icon. If this is the task's first relationship, click Relate items or add dependencies
- Select This task blocks or This task is blocked by.
- Search, browse, or create a new task.
From the task settings menu
From a task's settings:
- Open the task and click the ellipsis ... icon in the upper-right corner.
- Hover over Relationships.
- Select This task blocks or This task is blocked by.
- Search, browse, or create a new task.
From the dependencies section
Once a dependency has been added, dependencies are displayed above the task description.
To create a new Dependency Relationship:
- Hover over an existing dependency.
- On the right, click the plus icon.
- Select This task blocks or This task is blocked by.
- Search, browse, or create a new task.
Using /Slash Commands
To create a new Dependency Relationship using /Slash Commands:
- In the task description or a comment, type
/blocking,/waiting, or/link to. - Press
Enteron PC orReturnon Mac. - Search or browse for the task.
Using Automations
You can link tasks using dependency relationships through the following Automation Actions:
- Create task
- Create subtask
- Add Relationship
To add a Dependency Relationship via Automation:
- Create an Automation with the Add relationship Action.
- Click the Relationship type dropdown.
- Select This task blocks or This task is blocked by.
- Click Add task.
- Select a task to link to the trigger task.
Unlink Dependency Relationships
There are multiple ways to unlink Dependency Relationships.
From the dependencies section
From the dependencies section above the task description:
- Hover over an existing dependency.
- On the right, click the x icon.
Clear all dependencies
This action is permanent and cannot be undone.
From the dependencies section, you can also clear all dependencies.
- Hover over an existing dependency.
- On the right, click the plus icon.
- Select Clear all dependencies.
- Review the warning, then click Clear All.
- All dependencies are permanently removed.
From the Related section
From the Related section:
- Open the task and scroll down to the Related section.
- Click the Dependencies tab.
- Hover over a task and and click the x icon to remove it.
