Create Dependency Relationships between tasks.

What you'll need

Create Dependency Relationships

There are several ways to create Dependency Relationships in a task.

From the Related section

From a task's Related section:

  1. Open the task and scroll down to the Related/Relate items section.
  2. In the upper-right corner of the section, click the plus icon. If this is the task's first relationship, click Relate items or add dependencies
  3. Select This task blocks or This task is blocked by.
  4. Search, browse, or create a new task.

From the task settings menu

From a task's settings:

  1. Open the task and click the ellipsis ... icon in the upper-right corner.
  2. Hover over Relationships.
  3. Select This task blocks or This task is blocked by.
  4. Search, browse, or create a new task.

From the dependencies section

Once a dependency has been added, dependencies are displayed above the task description.

To create a new Dependency Relationship:

  1. Hover over an existing dependency.
  2. On the right, click the plus icon.

  3. Select This task blocks or This task is blocked by.
  4. Search, browse, or create a new task.

Using /Slash Commands

To create a new Dependency Relationship using /Slash Commands:

  1. In the task description or a comment, type /blocking,/waiting, or /link to.
  2. Press Enter on PC or Return on Mac.
  3. Search or browse for the task.

Using Automations

You can link tasks using dependency relationships through the following Automation Actions:

  • Create task
  • Create subtask
  • Add Relationship

To add a Dependency Relationship via Automation:

  1. Create an Automation with the Add relationship Action.
  2. Click the Relationship type dropdown.
  3. Select This task blocks or This task is blocked by.
  4. Click Add task.
  5. Select a task to link to the trigger task.

Unlink Dependency Relationships

There are multiple ways to unlink Dependency Relationships.

From the dependencies section

From the dependencies section above the task description:

  1. Hover over an existing dependency.
  2. On the right, click the x icon.

Clear all dependencies

This action is permanent and cannot be undone.

From the dependencies section, you can also clear all dependencies.

  1. Hover over an existing dependency.
  2. On the right, click the plus icon.
  3. Select Clear all dependencies.
  4. Review the warning, then click Clear All.
  5. All dependencies are permanently removed.

From the Related section

From the Related section:

  1. Open the task and scroll down to the Related section.
  2. Click the Dependencies tab.
  3. Hover over a task and and click the x icon to remove it.
