Create Dependency Relationships between tasks.

Create Dependency Relationships in task view 4.0

In task view 4.0, you can create Dependency Relationships from several places on tasks.

From the Relationships section

From the Relationships section:

  1. Click Relate or create tasks or the plus icon.
  2. Select This task blocks or This task is blocked by.
  3. Search, browse, or create a new task.

Once a dependency has been added, the Dependency tab is displayed in the Relationships section.

From the dependency tab:

  1. Hover over the Blocks or Blocked by section.
  2. Click the plus icon or Relate or create tasks.
  3. Search, browse, or create a new task.

From the task settings menu

From a task:

  1. In the upper-right corner, click the ellipsis ... icon.
  2. Click Relationships.
  3. Select This task blocks or This task is blocked by.
  4. Search, browse, or create a new task.

From the Dependencies section

Once a dependency has been added, dependencies are displayed above the task description.

  1. Hover over an existing dependency.
  2. On the right, click the plus icon.
  3. Select This task blocks or This task is blocked by.
  4. Search, browse, or create a new task.

Create Dependency Relationships in task view 3.0

In task view 3.0, you can create Dependency Relationships from several places on tasks.

From the Add Link tab

From the Add Link tab:

  1. Open a task.
  2. In the right sidebar, click the plus icon.
  3. Select This task blocks or This task is blocked by.
  4. Search or browse for the task.

From task tabs

From the Blocking or Waiting tab:

  1. Open a task.
  2. In the right sidebar, click the Blocking or Waiting tab.
  3. Click + Add dependency.
  4. Search or browse for the task.

From the Task settings menu

From the ellipsis ... menu:

  1. Open a task.
  2. In the upper-right corner, click the ellipsis ... menu.
  3. Select Relationships.
  4. Click Dependency.
  5. Select This task blocks or This task is blocked by.
  6. Search or browse for the task.

Create Dependency Relationships using /Slash Commands

Using /Slash Commands:

  1. In the task description or a comment, type /blocking,/waiting, or /link to.
  2. Press Enter on PC or Return on Mac.
  3. Search or browse for the task.

Create Dependency Relationships using Automations

You can link tasks using dependency relationships through the following Automation Actions:

  • Create task
  • Create subtask
  • Add Relationship

To add a dependency relationship through Automations:

  1. Click Relationship Type.
  2. Select This task blocks or This task is blocked by.
  3. Click Add task.
  4. Select a task to link to the trigger task.

Unlink Dependency Relationships in task view 4.0

In task view 4.0, you can unlink dependencies from two places.

From the dependencies section

From the Dependencies section above the task description:

  1. Hover over an existing dependency.
  2. On the right, click the x icon.

Clear all dependencies

This action is permanent and cannot be undone.

From the dependencies section, you can also clear all dependencies.

  1. Hover over an existing dependency.
  2. On the right, click the plus icon.
  3. Select Clear all dependencies.
  4. Review the warning, then click Clear All.
  5. All dependencies are permanently removed.

From the Relationships section

From the Relationships section:

  1. Click the Dependencies tab.
  2. Hover to the far right of a task row.
  3. Click the x icon.

Unlink Dependency Relationships in task view 3.0 

To unlink dependent tasks from a task:

  1. In the right column, click one of the Dependencies icons.
  2. Hover over an existing related task.
  3. Scroll all the way to the right and click the x icon.
