Recurring tasks FAQ

Find answers to common questions about recurring tasks.

How do I create a recurring task?

Take a look at our article Create recurring tasks to learn how.

Can I adjust start dates when a task recurs?

Yes! Click the Calendar icon and select a new start date.

What happens if I don't check the Create new task box?

Creating a new task duplicates the recurring task as a brand new task in your Workspace.

You can customize what you would like to include in the next instance of the recurring task.

If you leave the option to create a new task unchecked, then the start and due dates of the task will be updated to reflect the next recurrence according to the schedule.

All the current and completed activity, subtasks, checklists, and assigned comments will be kept on the task.

What happens if I manually change the Due Date for a recurring task on a schedule?

Manually changing the due date of a task has no effect on any of the recurring settings. It will still follow the same original schedule you have set.

For example:
A task is set to recur on the first Thursday of every month. In August, you manually change the due date back to the first Thursday in July. The next instance of the recurring task will be the first Thursday in September.

If you manually change the due date of the task in August to the first Thursday in September, it will overwrite the September instance of that task, and the next recurrence will be the first Thursday in October.

You can move a task forward up to the day before the next recurrence without impacting the recurring schedule.

If you find your recurring tasks have inadvertently skipped a recurrence, you'll need to remove the recurring schedule and set it up again as new.

What happens if I close a recurring task that's overdue?

The task will recur immediately, and create the next instance of the task according to the task's recurring settings.

For example, a daily recurring task's due date is yesterday, so it's overdue. Closing the task makes the task recur, which creates the next instance of the recurring task with a due date of tomorrow.

Can I see future occurrences on my calendar?

With a paid plan, you can make all future recurring tasks visible. Learn more here.

What is the subtask limit for recurring tasks?

Recurring tasks with 500 or more subtasks will not recur, and the recurring settings will be removed from the task.
The total number of subtasks includes nested, archived, and closed subtasks.
The limit applies to subtasks with recurring settings and more than 500 nested subtasks.
To allow a task or subtask to recur, you'll need to:
  1. Move or delete subtasks.
  2. Set up the recurring settings again.

What happens to recurring settings if the user that set them up leaves the Workspace?

Recurring settings remain unaltered, and the task will continue to recur at the set cadence.

What happens to tracked time when a task recurs?

Tracked time is not carried over to new tasks on recurring tasks.
